Mexico

Restaurant: La Perla - 28 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7JS

Mexico is in the south of North America, it is bordered by the United States, Belize and Guatemala. Its capital city is Mexico City.

Mexican cuisine is always thought of as being very spicy, which some of it is, but it can also be very mild. The food was largely influenced by the Spanish when they invaded Mexico in 1519 AD. A popular Mexican dish is tortillas (a flatbread made from finely ground flour), which can be filled  meat, guacamole, salsa, blackbeans, cheese, rice and peppers.

As Mexican is quiet a well known cuisine we had a lot of options. We passed one in Covent Garden called La Perla and decided to have a try.

Our orders:

Starter: Nachos - with tomato salsa.

Mains: Chicken Fajita - with spiced chicken, mixed pepper and onions. Served with pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream and refried beans.

Combination - 1 Enchilada verde and 2 roast beef street tacos. Served with black beans, rice and tomatillo verde cream.

La Perla Burrito - A mild smoked chile chicken tortilla (flour) with cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, mild roasted tomato chile salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Black beans and Mexican rice on the side.

Dessert: Hot Chocolate Brownie - with vanilla ice cream on the side. (I know, I know, not very Mexican)

Rating: ☆☆

Having heard some good reviews of La Perla, we were very disappointed. The Combination was average and the La Perla Burrito wasn't nice at all, it tasted like cleaning products. To make it worse, one of the so called 'HotChocolate Brownies came cold! They tasted shop bought. There were some positives though, the Chicken Fajita was served still sizzling in the pan which is a very special and unique way to receive food, what's more, it also tasted nice.

Best dish: Chicken Fajita

Could have been better: La Perla Burrito, Combination

If you want to have a Mexican meal I wouldn't suggest going to La Perla. Although the environment was nice, I think if you're going for something as popular as Mexican you can do better. For Mexican, I suggest you try Wahaca, this is my all time favourite Mexican.
